Article on the United Nations website highlights actions developed by the University during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

In 2019, Feevale University joined the United Nations Academic Impact (Unai), an initiative of the United Nations (UN) that supports and contributes to several objectives, such as the promotion and protection of human rights, access to education, sustainability, and conflict resolution. As a member of Unai, Feevale sends annual reports on its activities related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (17 SDGs).

The last report sent by Feevale to Unai regarding the Institution's activities in 2020, with the purpose of helping the community in relation to the difficulties brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, called positively the attention of UN members. The organization considered the University as “a pioneer in diagnosing, monitoring, and gathering data on Covid-19”, based on the work carried out by the Institution's Molecular Microbiology Laboratory.

An article on the United Nations website, in English, highlights the University's social commitment in its efforts to prevent and mitigate the pandemic, with 46,645 diagnostic tests performed in one year, and the fact that it provides the tests for more than 40 municipalities, more than 350 companies, and inhabitants in the region. Other works highlighted in the article include the genetic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, in addition to a wide range of support measures, such as the manufacture of coats, face shileds, masks, sheets, and pillowcases, which were donated to institutions in the regions close to Feevale.

All these actions focused on the community are examples of what the director of the International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), Francesc Pedró, said in a recent interview, “we have to realize that a good part of the solutions in the field of research for this pandemic and for others that will come in the future can probably be found in university laboratories”.
