Professor Alexandre Oliveira Tavares, from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, participated in various activities at the Institution. The purpose of the visit was to enable the exchange of practices and methodologies with the Environment and Society research group, which is coordinated by João Sganderla Figueiredo, Pro-Rector for Research, Graduate Studies and Extension, and also with the Environmental Education in Disasters program, led by professor Danielle Paula Martins.

On March 12th Tavares was received by International and Institutional Affairs Office. He participated in the VII Seminário Interno sobre Riscos e Desastres, with the objective of discussing issues related to environmental risks and disasters. Professor Tavares lectured on the topic Territorial vulnerability and risk governance. On March 14th, the Portuguese professor participated in Oficina Regional de Defesa Civil and presented the theme Risk management and emergency planning: multi-scale examples.

On Friday 15th, professor Tavares lectured on Risk management models: from processes to territory in the inaugural class of the Graduate Degree Program in Environmental Quality.

The professor holds a PhD in Geological Engineering, in the field of Geology of Environment and Planning by the University of Coimbra, where he also works nowadays. He has worked with the theme of risk management, planning and environmental vulnerability. He is a researcher at the Centro de Estudos Sociais, where he is a member of the Observatório do Risco – Osiris. He is also a professor of the Interdisciplinary Masters in Social Dynamics, Natural and Technological Risks and of the Inter-University Doctoral Program in Territory, Risk and Public Policies, director of the department of Earth Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) and member of the Scientific Panel of the National Strategy for Adapting to Climate Change ENAAC 2020.
